WHAT DOES HYPNOSIS FEEL LIKE?
WHAT DOES HYPNOSIS FEEL LIKE? COMMON QUESTIONS ANSWERED.
People often come along to a Quantum Hypnosis session with their own preconceived ideas about what hypnosis is. This may be influenced by previous experience, other people’s stories, or seeing hypnosis performed on stage, TV or in films.
As your practitioner, it is my job to explain the difference between reality and myth before we start. Many practitioners and therapists refer to this as ‘managing client expectations’, and it is a very important part of the hypnosis process.
I can’t relax/I have too much mind chatter/I’m too much of a control freak/I’m too analytical. I don’t think I can be hypnotised.
It’s very common for people to bring these worries to their session. Your practitioner will discuss your concerns with you and explain what can be done to help. Try to relax, and remember that we sometimes put these blocks in our path subconsciously. If you are consciously resistant to hypnosis, it is unlikely your session will work unless you have addressed your worries and fears.
Will I lose control of myself while I’m under hypnosis?
No! Even under hypnosis, your morals and boundaries remain the same. You cannot be made to do or say something against your will. For example, If you were put under hypnosis, the practitioner could not make you rob a bank, unless that is something you would do while conscious. You will not disclose or divulge anything you normally wouldn’t do either, so your embarrassing secrets are safe!
Will I lose consciousness while I’m under hypnosis?
No! You will most likely be very aware of my voice and your own answers, but background noise will be tuned out. Most people just feel pleasantly relaxed, a bit like before you fall asleep. A rare few will go very deeply into trance and won’t remember much of what happened during their session. These people are called ‘somnambulists’ and make very good hypnotic subjects, but they are rare!
What most people don’t realise is that hypnosis is a very natural state that we move in and out of many times over the course of a day as your brain changes frequency.
If you have ever ‘zoned out’ listening to a boring speech, or while walking round the supermarket, your brain is in a hypnotic trance. Driving a car along a familiar road, watching TV or reading a book are other examples of your brain switching down a gear.
Kamila Zsange, a Canadian therapist, describes it beautifully in this analogy:
‘I’d describe our daily life as the surface of a lake. We move from one place to another, with continuous thoughts of “what’s next, what’s next”. This creates a lot of motion on the surface of the lake, with lots of waves and ripples. For many people, that’s all they know about their lives. It’s very linear. From a hypnosis perspective, it’s the normal beta brainwave.
But as with any lake, there is always depth. People may not be aware of the depth if they are caught up in the busyness of life, the activities on the surface of the lake. The way to see what’s underneath is not by trying hard, or harder. Trying hard creates more waves and ripples. When we stop trying, such as when we go into hypnosis, we relax the body and the mind becomes passive. This lack of activity creates a natural stillness on the surface of the lake. Then the lake becomes clear, and the bottom can be easily discerned. The client is then ready to explore another dimension of the lake.’
So how DO you set aside your conscious analytical mind to have a successful hypnosis session?
Firstly, curiosity is key! Approaching your session with the mind of a child and zero expectations is the way to go.
In everyday life, your conscious mind is like the driver of the car, with your subconscious mind in the passenger seat. For a Quantum Hypnosis experience, they change places. Your conscious mind will play the part of the passenger, observing the journey, while your subconscious mind takes you to the appropriate place with the practitioner as the guide. If you have difficulty switching off your inner monologue, follow the practitioner’s voice and instructions as carefully as you can.
‘I feel like I’m making this whole thing up!’
The trick is to TRUST what impressions you get without doubting or analysing. Don’t think about how bizarre or silly your impressions sound-your job is just to report the experience.
Notice I talk about ‘impressions’. Not everyone ‘sees’ their experience visually. Some do, but many experience their regression in different ways or with different senses. Hearing words spoken, feeling sensations and emotions, smell, or even just knowing, all are valid.
Trust yourself without judgement or analysis-it is important not to be engaged with your thoughts either positively or negatively, just ‘focus on the road’.
Everything is dark, I can’t see anything. What have I done wrong?
Absolutely nothing! Trust your practitioner to help you navigate through your experience. Just follow her voice and instructions.
I wanted to visit a particular past life, or find the answer to a particular question, and it’s not happening. Why?
It’s important to clarify that it’s not always up to the conscious mind or the practitioner to set the agenda, your Higher Self will have it’s own agenda which will help you in the best possible way. Whatever situation or past life comes up and presents itself is doing so because it needs to come up and be addressed at this time. There will be something in the experience that will help you with your current questions.
Do I need to believe in reincarnation or past lives to have a Quantum Hypnosis experience?
No. You have come for an experience, and you don’t need to ‘believe’ to have that. Reincarnation is an abstract concept, and hypnosis practitioners can help us navigate our journey without buying into certain beliefs. If it helps, you can see your regression as a metaphor, where you use your imagination to help you answer questions you have about improving or enriching your life.
