HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT HEALER?

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT HEALER?

There are many choices you make on your healing journey that can make or break your experience. One of the most important is choosing the right modality and healer to work with. Usually, you will feel drawn to a certain modality, like acupuncture or reiki, but as there are many practitioners out there, you have to use your discernment to pick the right one for you. Different healers suit different clients, depending on their needs. The good news is that your Higher Self is usually in charge of putting the right healer in your path at the right time.

Here are some tips to help you:

  1. TRUST YOUR GUT. This is probably the most important advice I can give you. There are many healers out there who are amazing at what they do, but there are also a fair few whose motivation is less wholesome.
  2. DO SOME RESEARCH. Do they have a website? Does it explain clearly which modalities they work with and what they specialise in? Are they local? Would they travel to you if necessary? What are they charging? Can they do online or distance sessions?
  3. LOOK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS AND TESTIMONIALS. Most healers will list these on their website or Facebook page. It lets you see what experiences other people have had. Would they go back? Would they recommend that healer themselves? First hand recommendations from friends are also a good way to find someone suitable.
  4. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS. Unless you are looking for a specific therapy, this can be personal preference. Some therapies do require extensive training, exams, registration with governing bodies etc. to ensure clients are treated safely and competently, but others have developed organically from gifts the practitioner already had. I have met and worked with amazing healers who have never had any formal training, and some ‘masters’, with several courses under their belts who talked a good game, but fell short when it came to healing.
  5. SPEAK TO THEM ON THE PHONE. If you have found a healer you would like to work with, give them a call to ask some questions. Are they easy to talk to and happy to answer your questions over the phone? Are they a good listener? It should be a red flag if you speak to a healer and all they want to do is talk about themselves.
  6. PROFESSIONALISM. This covers a whole host of things, such as

*How warm and approachable is the person?

*Do you feel welcome in their workspace?

*Are they and their workspace clean, presentable and organised?

*Do they show empathy, and would you be comfortable baring your soul to them?

* Are they trustworthy and discreet?

*Do they respect other clients’ confidentiality?

7. SPIRITUAL HYGIENE. This is a weird one, but if you are going for reiki or any sort of energy healing, you want to be sure that your healer is cleansing his or her own energy to prevent any of their ‘stuff’ being transmitted to you during the healing. Don’t be afraid to ask what sort of energy cleansing practice they follow.

8. EXPERIENCE. This is often overlooked, but the more experience a healer has using a certain modality, or healing certain conditions, the better. Don’t be afraid to ask.

9. FEEDBACK AND FOLLOW UP. It is good practice for the healer to get some feedback from you as to how you feel before, during and after the session, and also to follow up about a week later to see how you have been feeling. A good healer will offer advice and help if something unexpected has come up.
